Campaigning for the countryside -

Manifesto
Our countryside faces many challenges, but the coming election gives politicians the chance to shape the way we care for and use it now and in the future. CPRE has produced a manifesto for the countryside. CPRE’s manifesto for the countryside will help us achieve our vision of a better countryside for all. We would like to see:
1) a democratic planning system that protects and enhances the countryside, promotes urban renewal and improves people’s quality of life
2) investment in public transport including bus, rail and coach, and safer walking and cycling
3) support for a national deposit scheme for drink containers, and ban free plastic bags if voluntary schemes do not work.
In addition, CPRE Cambridgeshire and Peterborough:
has concerns about the Cambridge Green Belt, which has already been eroded in order to allow for housing development at Trumpington Meadows, Clay Farm, North West Cambridge. We believe there should be a permanency about Green Belts; frequent reviews of their boundaries must be resisted.
believes there is a case for the creation of a new Green Belt around Peterborough. This would encourage development on previously developed land and curtail development in and around villages and on city edge sites. Otherwise, the city will simply sprawl. A Green Belt would also provide a firm break with Huntingdonshire.
