Litter – Stop the Drop

CPRE President Bill Bryson is spearheading a national campaign against litter in the countryside and towns.  He says the amount of money spent on cleaning England’s streets increased by £33m last year. We’re now spending £780m a year to pluck fast food wrappers out of hedges and plastic bottles from gutters.  He continues: That’s £2.1m a day clearing up after the thoughtless people who just can’t be bothered to put their litter in a bin.  It doesn’t take a moment to realise where else that money could be better spent – better schools and hospitals?

Although district councils are responsible for collecting litter, they cannot do as much as is needed.  So we are encouraging parish councils to organise litter picks.  CPRE has produced litter-picking packs (sticks, high vis vests, pairs of gloves, bag hoops, protective eyewear, and signage).  On the CPRE website www.cpre.org.uk there is an information pack for parish councils who would like to pursue anti-litter measures on an on-going basis.  The pack includes tips for running a successful litter pick, the pros and cons of enforcement through fixed penalty notices, a step-by-step guide to banning plastic bags in the village and much else.

One of our members, Michael, is a member of Cambridge Rutherford Rotary which is supporting CPRE’s national campaign to reduce litter in the countryside.  Successful litter picks have been held in Horningsea, Waterbeach, and Newton.  He is keen to help other small villages organise a litter-picking event and can provide the CPRE litter-picking pack.  About twenty parish councils in South Cambridgeshire have already been invited to take part in the campaign.  If you and your parish council wish to organise an event, please contact Michael through the Branch Co-ordinator (link).
