How much water could YOU save with a sharp shower?

The average shower takes 8 minutes and uses around 80 litres of water.  In these days of drought, countryside campaigners have come up with a TikTok and Instagram challenge to greatly reduce our consumption. 

Cambridge and Peterborough CPRE member Ryan Tuladah has created a short, fun video focused on encouraging people to take shorter showers and reduce unnecessary water use during the current drought. It goes live on TikTok and Instagram today (25^th August). He’s hoping it will be the first of a series of videos which will give practical but engaging tips on how to save water. 

“The aim is to make CPRE’s message on saving water accessible to a younger audience by using a simple, visual concept which sits happily on TikTok and Instagram rather than a traditional advertising campaign,” said Ryan, who’s 17 and studying for A levels at Long Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge. “Even small changes in our everyday behaviour can help protect our water resources and natural environment”.

The post issues a challenge to viewers to see who can take the shortest, most efficient shower. “We hope it will encourage people to share the message and get others involved,” Ryan continued. The video, which is less than a minute long, is designed to turn awareness of the drought into positive action and a fun challenge.  Ryan says so far three of CPRE’s trustees have accepted the challenge.  “Two of them claim to have beaten my four minutes 13 seconds but I bet they don’t take time out to sing in the shower.  It doesn’t take any extra water to do that!”

CPRE’s Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Marketing Coordinator, David Slater, added "We are fast approaching the limits of our existing water supply. As climate change brings more heatwaves and droughts, we need to look very carefully at the government's plan to build 150,000 homes across Greater Cambridgeshire. These plans don’t take into account the fact that our rivers and reservoirs won't have enough water supply to supply existing homes – let alone new ones. We need to think creatively about how we can save water as a society and the shower water saving challenge is just a start."
